Never ask your children what movie they want to watch without being completely prepared to watch the one film you have absolutely no desire to see, ever! That’s how I ended up watching Angry Birds this afternoon.
But, to my chagrin, I actually found it pretty entertaining. The clincher on the “thumbs up” came with the movies “redrum” and creepy-twins-in-a-hallway salute to the movie, The Shining.
This led me to thinking about the handful of movies my family watches a couple of times a year that pretty much no one else has ever heard of. Don’t worry – they all feature original story lines and enough humor to entertain children, teens and adults. (They’ve all been given the thumbs up from my 8-year-old, my 16-year-old, and myself!)
So, here is my list of the 5 greatest family movies you’ve never seen:
A Monster in Paris (2011)
Director: Bibo Bergeron
A French film with a completely original story line about a giant flea with FANTASTIC musical ability, a dance hall singer, a movie projector operator and the 1910 floods in Paris.
Strange Magic (2015)
Director: Gary Rydstrom
A completely surprising soundtrack, great animation, and a twist involving a sympathetic bad guy make this a movie you, and your kids, will want to watch more than once.
Director: Stephen Chow
The cutest little toy creature you’ve ever seen comes alive to help an impoverished boy and his father. It is a Chinese movie, so kids will need to be able to read subtitles to enjoy it, or find the dubbed version.
Gnomeo and Juliet (2011)
Director: Kelly Asbury
Two garden gnomes fall in love despite being from two feuding families (yards).
Director: Adrià García, Víctor Maldonado
What happens when one orphan boy can’t sleep and realizes the stars are winking out one by one? Beautiful, eerie and completely original. (Originally Spanish, English dubbed)
